Studies in Wax Casting

We focused on the material artifacts of prototyping as a link between studio-based design practice and industrial manufacturing. Our agenda was twofold: explore the value of full-scale fabrication through which design intent is articulated, questioned and redefined, and creatively engage with computational processes to shape material production.

We considered casting as a dynamic process of formation by using water as an infinitely flexible formwork. Using wax, we investigated the various formal results of casting through phase-change. Additives produced a variety of failures and desirable results. Our process was inherently experimental and accidental. Every piece is unique.
